Blurb

The early screenplays of Dilman Dila, these nine short scripts cover a wide variety of genres, from sad and melodramatic stories to dark-comedy thrillers.  In “After the Silence”, a woman speaks out about the abuse she suffers, but no one believes her. “Under Sarah’s Bed” is about a woman who discovers something evil living under her bed. “Home Is A Fine Place To Die” tells the story of a family when war comes to their town. “What Happened In Room 13” is a dark-comedy thriller, about an adulterous affair that goes horribly wrong. The woman ends up dead and the man has to race against time to hide the dead body. “Adyeri: Listening To Her Voice” is about a stalker, who hears the voice of a woman declaring her love for him. “Angels in the Sun Beams” is a sad-sweet drama about a little girl who defies her mother to take her older brother, who is bed-ridden with a severe disability, to school. “Her Fearing Friend” is the story of two teenage girls in an illicit relationship, as their country enacts a terrible anti-homosexuality bill. “Saving Mugisha” revolves around a teenage boy who has a bed-whetting problem.

1. INT. SARAH’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

A one roomed apartment. Sarah is about to go to sleep. She locks the door. Turns off the lights. Gets into bed.

A beat. The WINDOW rattles. The lights come on. Flies open.

Sarah sits up, scared. She stares at the window. The WIND BLOWS the curtains. May be it was just the wind. She shrugs, locks the window.

She turns off the light. Tries to sleep. CLICK! Someone turns on the lights!

Sarah stares at the bulb, then at the switch. Puzzled. While still on the bed, she turns it off, but the bulb stays on.

A SCRATCHING SOUND comes from under her bed. May be it’s a FLY BUZZING down there. Or a FROG?

Sarah peeps under the bed, and sees two red eyes.

She jumps back. Terror on her face. Did she really see eyes? She picks a torch, flashes under the bed. The torch goes off. CLICK! CLICK! CLICK! She can’t switch it back on.

The STRANGE SOUNDS, now like KNOCKS ON A DOOR, come again. Sarah thinks it’s time to flee. She jumps off the bed.

The moment her legs hit the ground, a flour-white hand shoots from under the bed. Grabs her. She falls. Screams.

2. EXT. OUTSIDE SARAH’S HOME – NIGHT

A NEIGHBOR hears the screams. Runs to her door.

3. INT. SARAH’S HOME – NIGHT

The hand drags her under the bed. She screams. Her nails scratch the plastic carpet in a vain attempt to resist the terror. She attempts to cling to the bed’s leg. But the force dragging her is just too powerful. She vanishes under the bed, and her screams end abruptly.

4. EXT. SARAH’S HOME – NIGHT

The neighbor is puzzled when the screams stop. Suddenly, the door opens on its own accord. He peers in, sees nothing.

He walks in, peers under the bed. Nothing. As he walks out, the hand shoots from underneath, missing his leg by inches.

He doesn’t notice. He hurries out.
